Durham Public School's New Superintendent
Dr. Mubenga
I have attended a Durham Public School town hall meeting in order to learn more information about district policies, trends, ideas for improving practices and procedures at YE Smith.
Lucas Middle School's Teacher Working Conditions (TWC)
We used the data from the TWC survey to make adjustments and additional areas of need. The TWC data was essential in planning the goals for the 207-18 school year. As a leadership team, we met weekly to discuss how we were working to improve areas of concern. We also leveraged staff expertise to empower staff leaders in the building.
Areas of Strength:
Teachers have time available to collaborate with colleagues (30.1)
Class sizes are reasonable such that teachers have time available to meet the needs of all students (24.5)
The non-instructional time provided for teachers in my school is sufficient (18.9)
Areas of Concern:
In the school, follow up is provided from professional development (-34.2)
Members of the School Improvement Team are elected (-30.3)
The procedures for teacher evaluations are consistent (-30)
Lucas Middle School Needs Assessment
I developed a needs assessment after the 1st Quarter to get a check on the pulse in the building. The needs assessment was used to see how well we were improving areas of concern according to the TWC.
Friday Clubs
We have Friday Clubs that meet every Friday. We have community partners from Duke Gardens, Nasher Museum, Museum of Life and Science, Reading Rangers, etc that participate in our weekly clubs. We also encourage staff members to lead and/or assist with a Friday Club. This gives staff and students an opportunity to experience a craft or innovative club.
